Classic Advent themes are Faith, Hope, Love, and Joy. Another is “Waiting”—not a popular theme in our culture, but an essential aspect of our spiritual development. “Love is patient,” perhaps one of the simplest yet best known of the Christian tenets, underscores the spiritual imperative of waiting. But how does waiting function in our spiritual growth? What does it look like? What are its fruits? Is it really necessary or even practical in our modern age?
This Sunday we will draw inspiration from one of the world’s most influential theologians, someone whose life demonstrated the power of the spiritual discipline of waiting. My hope is that by exploring this Advent theme we will go into Christmas week better prepared to receive all the joy, mystery, and hope of this season. Gospel singer Yvette Laukaitis and jazz bass player Marty Mitchel will join us to will help set the mood and tone of our waiting theme. Rumor has it that they may stick around after our service for a bit of Christmas Carol singing! On another note (!), several of you who were at last Sunday’s community singing service with Josh Blaine have asked how you can get in touch with Josh and how you can support him. That information can be found below.
I hope you will make plans to join us this Sunday, our last Sunday of Advent, for a special heart-felt look at the power of waiting. What a joy it will be to share this with you!
With much love, Linda
